Mr. Feng, an ordinary man, recounts his and his wife's life under the difficult conditions of urban China in the late 1970s.<p> "I'm Just an Idiot" features a man who, like the vast majority of city dwellers, lives in a space limited to ten square meters, almost entirely occupied by the bed shared by his parents and their two sons. In such conditions, the couple's relationship has soured over the years. The wife blames her husband for his inability to improve their situation due to his own stupidity. Their lives only worsen when he tries—unsuccessfully—to swap his "apartment" and discovers cases far worse than his own. Adding to this desperate situation are housing experts who turn out to be nothing more than con artists preying on citizens' distress. Beyond the specific situation in China, universal poverty is forcefully denounced in this work.</p>
