A young sailor consumed by love and ambition<p> For her new production, Mélodie-Amy Wallet – a frequent collaborator of Jean Bellorini, director of the Théâtre National Populaire in Villeurbanne – has chosen to adapt Martin Eden, Jack London's cult novel. On stage, two actors (Karyll Elgrichi and Damien Zanoly), accompanied by two musicians (Marion Chiron and Anthony Caillet) and their instruments (accordion, brass, electronic keyboards), recount the rise of a young sailor from the lower classes of American society. Having fallen madly in love with a woman from the upper class, he decides to educate himself and learn on his own in order to win the heart of the woman he loves.</p><p> A poetic ode to reading and freedom, carried by a rich and captivating soundscape, a refined staging and the power of words at the heart of the journey.</p>
