Spectators become witnesses to the inner turmoil of a young man broken by a heartbreak. Wandering in the winter solitude, haunted by memories of past happiness, he drifts to the brink of madness. This extraordinary winter journey will astonish with its dual popular and poetic appeal, as well as its influences from jazz and world music—the very universe of these two sublime performers.

Echoing the popular roots so present in Schubert's music, the two artists approach Winterreise as a series of love songs of apparent simplicity.

The narration conceived by playwright Florient Azoulay, amidst the electroacoustic soundscapes of Olivier Innocenti, guides the spectator's imagination, and gives Schubert's masterpiece a universal dimension in which everyone can recognize themselves.

The program:

Schubert leads to everything

Schubert

Rastlose Liebe et Romanze

Mendelssohn

Auf Flügeln des Gesanges and Schilflied and Pagenlied

Schubert

Fischerweise and Erlafsee

Liszt

Im Rhein, im schönen Strome et Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh

Schubert

Night and Dreams

Brahms

Unbewegte laue Luft et Lerchengesang et An eine Äolsharfe

Schubert

Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt

Wolf

Wanderers Nightlied and Kennst of the Land
Art project

Winter Journey is a work that stimulates creativity but also arouses a form of obsession in its interpreters. Noëmi Waysfeld and Guillaume de Chassy have taken it up with fervor, united by their respective singularities: a singer of oral tradition, familiar with songs of exile across Europe, and a lover of classical melody; an improvisational pianist and composer, who plays with the boundaries between Jazz and Classical; both of them enamored of sobriety and depth; both of them "atypical artists" (a status as flattering as it is uncomfortable in a powerfully normative era).

Echoing the folk roots so prevalent in Schubert's music, they approached Winterreise as a series of seemingly simple love songs. Their reinterpretation of 13 lieder (out of the 24 in the cycle) resulted in an album released on the Klarthe label in 2020, whose unique style was praised by the press.

It was the first step in a long-term creative process and obsession.

The next stage aims to create a dreamlike recital, far removed from conventional forms. The musical reinterpretation will be deepened and extended through a dramatic and sonic creation. Around the voice-piano duo, the narrative conceived by Florient Azoulay and the electroacoustic soundscapes of Olivier Innocenti will guide the audience's imagination. The singer will thus also be the narrator; the voice and the piano will be sonic sources transformed by subtle electronic processing.

Ultimately, it's about telling a simple story: that of a young man broken by a heartbreak, wandering through the winter wilderness. Throughout this journey, the audience will witness the inner turmoil of this unfortunate protagonist who, haunted by memories of past happiness, wanders to the brink of madness. In an intimate atmosphere, poetry, strangeness, pain, and tenderness will be invoked in turn.

Through a new prism, Schubert's brilliant melodies will hopefully be perceived as dreamlike episodes, in even greater proximity to the listener.

Is Winterreise finally accessible to a wider audience than that of classical recitals? That is the gamble of this creation.

A well-prepared residency at the Royaumont incubator would allow for the development of a coherent stage performance under optimal working conditions.

Methodology – prior to the residency: musical adjustment of voice and piano, drafts of sound materials and dramaturgical design.

During the residency:

– in-situ experimentation and finalization of sound materials (including voice-piano collection/processing)

– selection and processing of texts

– editing and scriptwriting of the whole: song, music, narration, soundscapes

– finalization of a coherent stage form

– working on the sound balance at the front

Stage device to be reached

– on stage: singer-narrator and pianist
